The Adaminaby Local Post Office closed its doors on Monday 7 November, but a new Community Postal Agency (CPA) office opened in its place the same day.
Unlike nearby Dalgety, which has been without a post office for almost a year, forcing residents to drive to Cooma to pick up their mail, Adaminaby residents won’t be significantly inconvenienced by the changeover.
The new CPA office is located at the side of the Cox Property Solutions office at 14-16 Denison Street and operating hours are 8:30 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 4 pm Monday to Friday.
An Australia Post spokesperson said PO Boxes in Adaminaby would continue to be serviced at the previous location, 10-12 Denison Street, until Monday 21 November, when they will be moved to the new agency.
Dalgety Post Office closed in December 2021 and local residents are frustrated that there is no street mail delivery in this area.
Australia Post is redirecting Dalgety’s mail to Cooma Post Office which is a 90-minute round trip. For a year residents have been campaigning for their mail to instead go to Berridale, just 10 minutes away.
A spokesperson said Australia Post was working with a prospective agent to restore a CPA as soon as possible.
“Australia Post is committed to postal services in Dalgety and Adaminaby,” the spokesperson said.
“We plan to open a Community Postal Agency in Dalgety as soon as possible and we’re currently working with a prospective agent to understand when this will be.
“While Adaminaby LPO (is) closed, a new CPA is now open and we are exploring restoring a full range of postal services in the near future.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these changes and we will keep the Dalgety and Adaminaby communities updated on any changes.”
Customers can continue to access a full range of postal services and products at Berridale and Cooma Post Offices.
More than 700 CPAs operate in rural and remote areas, providing an over-the-counter delivery service. About 90 per cent of CPAs operate as part of another business, such as a general store.
All CPAs operate under a common agreement, which is renewable every two years.
CPAs can offer varying mail and postage services. At a minimum, they offer basic postage assessment, stamp sales and over-the-counter mail acceptance and delivery. They don’t offer agency services such as bill payment and banking.
