UPDATE, 12:30 pm: Tragically, a fourth person has died on the ACT’s roads this year after a two-vehicle collision near the Canberra Airport.
The 30-year-old man from Queanbeyan died at the scene of a head-on crash on Wednesday morning (20 December).
ACT Policing said a Holden Astra hatchback and a Nissan Patrol 4WD had collided on Pialligo Avenue between Scherger Drive and Oaks Estate Road.
Emergency services treated the occupants of the vehicles.
The 30-year-old was driving the Astra and sadly died at the scene.
The occupants of the Nissan, a man and a woman, were taken to Canberra Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Acting Inspector Mark Richardson said there was significant damage to both vehicles.
“It’s a tragic event at any point, but especially at this time of the year,” he said.
He said the weather conditions would form part of the investigation, as the road was wet from rain at the time.
“We just ask people to drive to the conditions of the road,” he said.
“If the roads are wet, people need to take that little bit of extra care whatever the speed limit is, just drive to the conditions.”
“The reasons behind this accident will become evident once the investigation gets underway.”
He said the 30-year-old’s next of kin have been notified.
