The construction of a long-awaited community centre has commenced in South Jerrabombera.
The sod-turning ceremony was attended by Member for Monaro Steve Whan, Village Building Co chief executive officer Vincent Whiteside and Queanbeyan Mayor Kenrick Winchester.
The hub, set to open in quarter one of 2025, is designed to facilitate social gatherings and business events, while the farming history of Tralee will be showcased in a gallery within the centre.
The building will also include an event space with a bar and kitchen facilities, as well as three meeting rooms with a separate kitchen for catering.
Directly adjacent to the centre will be a park filled with outdoor entertainment opportunities, including a learn-to-ride track, an outdoor gym, a water splash park, a formal play space and a nature play area.
Half a basketball court, barbecue and toilet facilities will also feature in the area.
The centre and park facilities will be powered by solar panels.
Member for Monaro Steve Whan said the project is close to his heart.
“We were discussing this project when I got into politics back in 2003, so to see it finally in action is terrific,” Steve said.
“There has been a bit of back and forth over it for 20 years and I am so excited to be back in politics in time to see it come to light.”
Steve said the facilities available as a result of the project will cater for people of all demographics.
“Queanbeyan is such a great area to live in and we’re hoping the addition of the hub will encourage more people to become members of the South Jerra group as we evolve.”
Village Building Co chief executive officer Vincent Whiteside said the developments will enrich the lives of residents in the future.
“We aspire to not only develop land and homes but create communities, and that’s exactly what you see here today,” Vincent said.
Vincent said he and his team are thrilled to be taking part in the opening of such a significant space.
“To have a vibrant community, you need a high level of team spirit, and we’re hoping these developments provide a hub for residents to continue to build on just that.”
Queanbeyan Mayor Kenrick Winchester said Village Building should be congratulated on their success with the project so far.
“We are very keen to see the facilities come out of the ground, and the location for it all is perfectly positioned close to schools and surrounding sporting complexes,” Kenrick said.
“It’s great to see such progress within the community when it comes to projects like these.”
