A former council employee has been charged after allegedly approving fake invoices for contractors across southern NSW.
On Thursday (29 January), a NSW Police spokesperson said the Financial Crimes Squad Fraud Unit established Strike Force Mullagh in May 2024 to investigate allegations of fraud and corruption.
At about 8:50 pm yesterday evening (28 January), a 59-year-old man was arrested at Parramatta Police Station.
“Following inquiries, detectives discovered the man had allegedly authorised and approved fraudulent invoices for contractors in Goulburn, Shoalhaven and Murrumbidgee areas,” the spokesperson said.
“During the period, a total amount of $1,295,029.94 was allegedly deposited into bank accounts that were controlled by him.”
The man was employed at councils between 2012 and 2024, police say.
He has been charged with 41 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage etc by deception. He was also handed one count of holder of public office misconduct him or herself.
He was refused bail and is expected to appear at Parramatta Local Court later today.
