A waterslide may be part of a major upgrade to the Bega War Memorial Pool, with Bega Valley Shire Council (BVSC) set to redevelop the facility.
The council has released a tender for the development of its existing plans for the site.
Aquatic and Leisure Facilities Coordinator Nicholas Hoynes said the tender invited architects and facility designers to create a detailed blueprint for the site.
“This project will redevelop the facility to include a 10-lane 25m pool, warm water program pool, wading pool with water play features, accessible facilities and environmentally sustainable design,” Mr Hoynes said.
“It will deliver a modern, accessible and fit-for-purpose aquatic facility that supports sport, exercise, rehabilitation, recreation and water safety education.”
There are also plans to include accessible facilities and have an environmentally sustainable design.
In 2020, BVSC endorsed concept plans for the project, which featured a potential waterslide and a 25-metre pool to better accommodate the most users.
Council documents from the time state it had the highest swimming pool attendance, as well as the highest learn to swim and school squad program participation of pools in the Bega Valley.
A BVSC spokesperson said the tender would allow for the planned upgrade to progress.
“The current tender is for the detailed design and documentation development required to progress the project to development consent and construction procurement,” the spokesperson said.
“At a high level, the scope of the tender includes review of existing concept design and supporting documentation, detailed design and documentation development, project cost planning, development of application submission, construction of tender design and specification development and assisting council through project construction, construction certificate issue and practical completion.”

During the 2025 federal election, the Labor Government pledged $16 million towards the project.
The council recently submitted a formal application for funding through the Major and Local Community Infrastructure Program, after being invited to do so by the Federal Government.
“We’re excited to see this vital project moving ahead, supported by much-needed Federal Government funding,” Mr Hoynes said.
“The upgraded pool will give our community a central place to stay active, connect and support both health and social well-being.”
According to the council’s website, design work and project development on the upgrade would wrap up by November 2026, before the plans are officially lodged.
If given the green light, a contractor would be engaged by late 2027, with construction to last until early 2029.
The pool would reopen later that year, in line with the outdoor pool season.
Interested businesses can apply through the Vendor Panel website before the tender closes at noon on 20 February.
A decision is expected by 21 May.
The Bega War Memorial Pool was officially opened in 1963 and is one of several managed by the council.
