A random breath test near the southern NSW town of Yass resulted in police finding and seizing $1.5 million from a vehicle.

Officers stopped the Toyota Hi-Ace van, which was travelling north on the Hume Highway, before 9 am on Tuesday (16 December) for the random test, a NSW Police spokesperson said.

While the 25-year-old male driver returned a negative result to breath and drug tests, the officers claimed they had a reason to search his vehicle.

They found a lounge in two pieces in the back of the van. Inside the lounge, there was a suitcase and two shopping bags containing a total of $1.5 million in cash.

“The cash, car and mobile phones were seized for forensic examination,” the police spokesperson said.

The driver and his 37-year-old male passenger were arrested and charged with recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

They were granted conditional bail and scheduled to face Goulburn Local Court on 21 January 2026.
