Following extensive planning and preparation, the groundwork for the new Multipurpose and Evacuation Centre (MEC) in Richmond Park, Tumut has officially begun.
Snowy Valleys Council recently awarded the project to Hines Constructions and received the construction certificate last week, paving the way for works to begin.
The project is jointly funded thanks to $13.8 million through the Australian and NSW governments’ Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund.
Snowy Valleys Council’s infrastructure and works director Duncan Mitchell said the start of construction marked the transition from planning to delivery of the project, which would bring significant benefits to not just Tumut but the broader community of the Snowy Valleys.
“With Hines Constructions on board, we’re confident this project will be delivered to the highest standard and that the community will be well informed as works progress,” Mr Mitchell said.
Site preparations, including the placement of temporary fencing, are underway and nearby residents have received advance notification of the works via a letterbox drop.
Construction will take place from 7 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday works as required, in full compliance with council regulations and the approved development application conditions.
Mr Mitchell said during this period, the community could expect increased vehicle movements, demolition activity, construction noise and temporary changes to site access and nearby footpaths.
“To minimise impacts, Hines Constructions will implement strict environmental and safety management practices, including regular site safety inspections, dust-suppression measures and comprehensive traffic management protocols in accordance with the approved development application conditions,” he said.
Members of the public were this week invited to a community project meeting to hear firsthand from Hines team members as they shared details of the works to be undertaken.
The MEC is to be built at the Russell Street end of Richmond Park and will deliver a modern, purpose-built venue to support both the everyday needs and future resilience of the community.
Key features of the centre include indoor multipurpose courts, equivalent to two basketball courts, viewing stands for spectators, male and female amenities and change areas, a reception area, an indoor cafe area, landscaped curtilages and off-street parking for 50 vehicles.
The new building can double as an evacuation centre during emergencies.
