This week there’s heaps to see and do (and listen to) all over the regions. There’s a particular focus on live music, with a great selection of orchestral music, blues festivals, and award-winning solo acts that have made a real mark on the Australian music scene. But if music isn’t your thing, we also have workshops, author talks and more to keep you engaged.

Spread out over an entire weekend and set on the beautiful backdrop of the Moruya River, Blues and Roots is quickly becoming a staple in the local music scene by bringing a great line-up of musicians to town. This great display of local music has sold out every year since its genesis, so book your tickets today before it’s too late.

Kangarutha Farm’s Native Plant Sale and Open Day
When: 22 and 23 March
Where: Kangarutha Farm, 343 Tathra Rd, Kalaru
Cost: Free.
Green thumbs, horticulturalists and garden enthusiasts will be excited to know that the farm’s bi-annual Native Plant Sale and Open Day is on this weekend. It has a wide range of native plants on sale to spruce up your outdoor space and you’ll be able to chat to some experts beforehand so you can get all the information you need to make your new plants thrive.
The open day will also feature a bird walk and talk at 10 am, live music and the chance to explore the new nursery, with tea and biscuits provided.

Lieder Theatre Company Presents: Around the World in 80 Days
When: 21 March, cocktail open night, 7:30 pm; 22 March, 2 pm and 7:30 pm; and 26 March, 7:30 pm

The Lieder Theatre Company brings Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days to life with this exciting play about a race across the continents. Main characters Phileas Fogg and loyal servant Passepartout must use everything at their disposal to set a blistering pace across the globe and they do just that, meeting a plethora of characters along the way (40 to be exact, played by just a few actors). It’s a funny, smart and creative retelling of a classic tale that has stood the test of time, produced by the Lieder Theatre Company.

Sydney Symphony Orchestra Performs Brass Masterpieces
When: 21 March, 7:30 to 8:45 pm

Celebrate the big sound of a brass orchestra with a world-class ensemble. For one night only the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will play some of the grandest and most moving music that an orchestra can muster, featuring a broad range of artists spanning centuries.
Revel in the great work of the Russian musical innovator Mussorgsky, whose sound and structure created a new identity in Russian composition. Then become enrapt in the sparkling music of Purcell in The Fairy Queen. The show will finish with shorter pieces by John Williams, a titan of the modern orchestra whose sound is recognised and appreciated across the globe.

Ash Grunwald at Smokey Dan’s

Cost: Tickets $50.
One of the biggest names in the Australian blues scene is coming to Tomakin. Bringing all the best from his chart-topping albums, Grunwald is a sensation who brings a vibrant high-energy feel to each of his shows – and for one night only at Smokey Dan’s.
This is a family-friendly event; doors open at 5 pm and music begins at 6 pm, with a special guest yet to be announced.

Large Clay Vase Workshop
When: 22 March, 10 am to 1 pm
Where: 1428 Yass Valley Way, Yass
Cost: Members pay $195; non-members tickets, $230.
This class takes both seasoned vets and new hands through each step needed to hand-make your own clay vase. Make something unique with your own designs, shapes and patterns using supplied tools. You then have your choice of glaze to achieve a brilliant finish you can be proud of. All materials are provided, however you are asked to bring your own apron.

Head to Sutton for a great country fair to raise funds for the Sutton Public School P&C. There will be plenty of activities for the whole family, such as a rock-climbing wall, face painting, fair games, a barbecue, cake, plant and book stalls and more.

Bach in the spotlight: Free fun at Cobargo’s celebration of composer’s birthday

Local choirs Spirit Allegro and Haak will be performing alongside players of the recorder, keyboard, clarinet and harpsichord, as well as Canberra’s Uccellini Recorder Ensemble, at the Cobargo School of Arts Hall on 23 March to celebrate the life and music of the great Bach.

Award-winning author, musician and screenwriter Dave Warner is coming to Braidwood Library to talk about his latest novel When It Rains, a crime/mystery about a detective in Australia’s sunburnt interior fighting a wave of crime across a jurisdiction larger than most countries. Racing against the killer and the clock, our protagonist needs to connect the dots before it’s too late. Warner will also incorporate live music within the talk inspired by his writing.
