There are so many exciting things happening in the regions this week – nature walks, art shows, food and wine festivals, and markets celebrating great regional produce. There is always something to thrill, excite, educate or intrigue in the regions.

Art exhibition: Basil Sellers Art Prize

When: 24 to 30 January, 10 am to 4 pm
Where: Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre, corner Vulcan and Murray streets, Moruya
Cost: Free.

The Basil Sellers Art Prize is an opportunity for artists around Australia to compete in a range of artistic styles, including painting, drawing and printmaking. The exhibition is a real treat for the eyes, as finalists from around the country are proudly displayed alongside each other. See the creativity of Australian artists of all stripes on show.

Snowies Beer, Food & Wine Festival

When: 24 to 26 January
Where: 1 Friday Drive, Thredbo
Cost: Free entry.

Live music, barbecue, craft brews and wine are on at Snowies Beer, Food and Wine Festival in Thredbo. Sample local wine and beer and get a chance to speak with the brewers and winemakers, enjoy a crafted five-course meal at the welcome dinner or just sit back and listen to some local artists and sample the bevvies. Snowies Festival is a great way to spend the long weekend and support local producers in a low-key laid-back environment.

OYSTER+WINE+ART POP-UP

When: 25 January, 1 pm
Where: Bay Pavilions, Vesper Street, Batemans Bay
Cost: $50, book your tickets here.

This mini pop-up oyster festival is all about celebrating the best seafood snack. Festivalgoers will be offered a grazing platter of oysters, cheeses and a perfect pairing of Picpoul wines – all while they view reproductions of oyster-themed artworks from artists hanging in the Rijksmuseum and the D’Orsay. Organiser Steve Feletti has been a staple in the Aussie oyster sphere for years and has chosen to elevate and enhance the already amazing flavour of an oyster with his own wine made from cuttings directly from France. Enjoy this mini-festival of flavour in Batemans Bay.

Railway Museum Artisan Markets

When: 26 January, 10 am to 2 pm
Where: 3 Crago St, Yass
Cost: Free.

Food, activities, arts and crafts at the Railway Museum Artisan Markets. Congregate under the trees and say farewell to the school holidays at this family-centred event with music and water activities for the kids. Before school goes back give the kids one more day in the sun at a favourite local spot for gatherings, markets and community events.

Marine Rescue Tuross Head Australia Day Community Breakfast BBQ

When: 26 January, 8 am to 12:30 pm
Where: One Tree Lookout Picnic Area, Tuross Boulevarde, Tuross Head
Cost: Cash is encouraged for donations.

The Tuross Moruya Marine Rescue Unit is holding one of its most important fundraising drives – its annual Australia Day community breakfast, with all proceeds going towards helping the Marine Rescue Unit’s volunteers do their vital work. The volunteers will be selling cold drinks, coffee, sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls.

It’s all about locals at the breakfast barbecue. Bring your bathers, chairs and a picnic blanket and support a great local institution dedicated to keeping the community safe. The event will also include a raffle.

It’s a great place to speak to local volunteers about how you can help out.

Monday

“Made in Araluen” Markets

When: 27 January, 10 am to 2 pm
Where: Araluen Federal Hall, Araluen Road, Araluen
Cost: Free entry, cash preferred for stalls.

Araluen locals get together this coming Monday to share local produce, handmade products, baked goods and much more. It’s a great way to support community producers, artisans, creatives and bakers while getting a little something for yourself or a loved one. There’ll be one-of-a-kind knitted things, specialty vodkas and gins and plenty of local mouthwatering food.

Wednesday

Lunar New Year Story Party at the Goulburn Mulwaree Library

When: 29 January, 10:30 am to noon
Where: Goulburn Mulwaree Library, Goulburn
Cost: $5.

Introduce a new holiday to your kids with the Goulburn Mulwaree Library’s Lunar New Year story party. Kids will learn about the holiday – which is important to more than a billion people around the world – through picture books, crafts and a special morning tea. It’s a great way for kids to learn and expand their understanding of world culture in the year of the snake.

New Moon Hike – Mt Kosciuszko

When: 29 January
Where: Meeting with your experienced guide is outside Valley Terminal
Cost: $189.

This grade 3, 13-km walk with an experienced guide will take you past rivers, alpine lakes and gorgeous iconic Kosciuszko scenery. Experience the new moon in one of Australia’s most scenic places. With minimal light pollution, you’ll be able to see the moon clearer than you ever could at home. Get a bit closer to nature as your guide points out local flora and fauna and provides expert insight on the landscape and environment. This great opportunity has limited spots, book now.
