Police are investigating after a fire caused significant damage at a tip in the Bega Valley.
Bega Valley Shire Council said the Eden Waste and Recycling Centre was broken into between Saturday night (30 November) and Sunday morning (1 December).
NSW Police said emergency services were called to the tip on Princes Highway, Eden at around 9:30 am on Sunday following reports of a shed fire.
“Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service attended and extinguished the fire, however, the shed was destroyed,” a police spokesperson said.
A council spokesperson said the incident caused significant damage, including the destruction of the Re-Sale shed by the fire, damage to a loader and a break-in at the gatehouse.
“This senseless act of vandalism forced the centre to close temporarily on Sunday, disrupting a valuable community service,” the spokesperson said.
“The damage was discovered by staff early Sunday morning, and NSW Police, the Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue attended the scene.”
Police arrived at the tip and established a crime scene.
“Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Bega Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” the police spokesperson said.
Council said the tip had since reopened.
“[We] are committed to restoring the Re-Sale service as quickly as possible,” it said.
if it was a contract requirement, why did it need a vote of the councillors (that was only won 5-4)? View
