Hilltops Council has announced plans to remediate a 1100 sqm area at Coddington Park in Murrumburrah after fragments of asbestos-containing material (ACM) were discovered on the ground surface.

The asbestos was identified during an assessment prompted by an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) investigation into contaminated mulch supplied to various sites across NSW, which included the park.

While no asbestos was found in the mulch at this location, ACM fragments were detected by council staff.

The contamination is believed to stem from historical fill material, likely originating from a former pool and power station once located at the site.

Coddington Park has recently been the site of significant upgrades which included improved accessibility, new play areas for children, a small creekside beach and additional parking facilities for visitors.

It was reopened to the public in December 2023.

“While the discovery of asbestos has been identified as low risk, the safety of our community remains our utmost priority,” said Hilltops Council general manager Anthony O’Reilly.

“We are committed to taking every necessary precaution and will be working closely with the NSW EPA and Public Health Unit during the asbestos remediation process to ensure the well-being of all residents,” he said.

Temporary fencing and signage will be installed around the site to ensure public safety during the remediation process as council staff consult with the assessor to determine the most effective remediation strategy.
