Lagom Bakery in Burrill Lake is hosting its first community market on 13 October. The event will feature the area’s makers and artists from the area and raise money for an important local issue.

Lagom marketing manager Hannah Cole told Region that the bakery was looking forward to showcasing the community’s talents.

“A few of the artists who will be at the market already sell their pieces in the shop, so this is an opportunity for them to have a stall, sell more of their stuff, and a nice way for our customers to meet the people behind these goods as well,” she said.

The market will raise funds and awareness for Safe Waters Community Care, an Ulladulla-based shelter and service supporting the most vulnerable people in the community. Safe Waters offers emergency housing and provides transitional housing, which allows people looking for accommodation to have a rental record.

Safe Waters Shelter coordinator Jody Quinnell told Region that the charity organisation had been making an impact in the community.

“Guests who stay with us say they feel safe, nurtured and supported here,” she said.

“We provide mentoring and holistic support and we can connect our guests with other services to meet specialist needs.”

For the Lagom team, their bakery is about more than just a place to make and sell bread, and this event is a reflection of their values.

“Our ethos is to nourish our community,” Hannah said. ”We see that as feeding people with healthy sourdough and other household staples but we also see Lagom as a meeting place. It’s socially nourishing and builds community connection.

“Being able to support Safe Waters as well just ticks all those boxes and really embodies the spirit of Lagom.”

The team is calling this market a Maker’s Edition, which will include local crafters and artists, ceramics, flowers and more. There will also be an opportunity to win a range of local prizes in a raffle for Safe Waters.

Jody said they were hoping to speak with community members who might be interested in volunteering for the organisation.

“We’re getting very close to opening a new men’s shelter in Ulladulla which is an even bigger premises, so we’re going to need to increase our volunteer numbers,” she said.

“As a volunteer organisation, we survive on community support from people in Milton and Ulladulla.”

People looking to support Safe Waters can buy raffle tickets at Lagom and make a donation of cash or vouchers for local businesses offering essential services such as linen, petrol and groceries.

The Lagom Maker’s Edition Community Market will be held on 13 October from 9 am to noon in the Lagom Bakery carpark, 98 McDonald Pde, Burrill Lake, NSW.
