Update 4:00 pm: A Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council spokesperson said the road was open as of 3:50 p.m. after material was removed from it and a street sweeper passed through the area.
The public has been asked to avoid a Googong street after a fire broke out in a recycling load.
A Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) spokesperson said the fire broke out on Monday morning (24 June).
“The contractor has dumped the load onto Calthorpe Street so that Fire and Rescue NSW can extinguish the load,” they said.
“Once the fire is out, the waste will be cleaned up and taken to landfill.
The spokesperson also said that the fire was extinguished by 11:30 am, and the recycling load would now be cleared from the road.
“We expect Calthorpe Street to be affected for the rest of the day.”
A spokesperson for Jerrabomberra Creek Rural Fire Brigade, who also attended the scene, asked people to avoid the area.
The QPRC spokesperson warned people to be careful when putting their rubbish and rubbish into the bin.
“This is an important reminder to only put the right items in your bins. Recycling bins should only have paper and cardboard, steel and aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers,” they said.
“Batteries are often the cause of fires in waste loads and they should not go in any of your kerbside bins.
“They need to be taken to a battery drop-off point, which includes supermarkets, tool and hardware stores, or community recycling centres.”
A list of drop-off points is available online.
