We all know Australia Day is on Friday (26 January), but what else is on this week? Here are nine events, including a food market, music performances and a comedy show.
Multiple days
Baba Yaga’s Table exhibition
When: Until 7 February, 10 am to 4 pm (Monday to Saturday) and 10 am to 1 pm (Sunday)
Where: Spiral Gallery, 47 Church Street, Bega
Cost: Free entry.
This is a solo exhibition of still-life paintings and illustrations from Vivienne Arnott that draws on her Eastern European heritage, as well as the plants and objects of her everyday life. The exhibition takes its name from the character (or trio of sisters) in Slavic folklore that is either helpful or harmful to humans.
2024 Numeralla Folk Festival
When: 26 to 28 January
Where: Numeralla Diggers Memorial Hall, MacLean Street, Numeralla
Cost: Free entry.
The annual three-day festival is set to return, and organisers have planned concerts, a bush dance, music workshops, a morning market and a raffle to keep the crowd entertained.
Printmaking: Intro to Etching
When: 1 to 29 February (specific days), 1 to 4 pm
Where: Creative Space Goulburn, 205 Auburn Street, Goulburn (entry is through Clifford Street)

Itching to do something creative with your hands? This is a five-week course for those interested in learning about etching for the first time. Etching is a printmaking method that sees lines cut into the material’s service and then filled with ink – this course will cover the overall process of etching, as well as the materials and tools needed. The ticket price includes instruction, the materials and morning tea during the sessions.
PCYC Goulburn School Holiday Program
When: Until 31 January, various times
Where: Goulburn PCYC, corner of Avoca and Derwent streets, Goulburn

It doesn’t have to be difficult keeping the kids busy during the school holidays! PCYC Goulburn has a program of sport, creative activities, children’s games and more. Participants are asked to bring a water bottle, lunch and some snacks and a hat.
Friday
Australia Day 2024

Councils across southeastern NSW are hosting events – depending on where you live, you might be able to check out a pool party, a free barbecue breakfast, a fireworks display, a dusk display and much more.
Saturday
Mista Savona Live
When: 27 January, 4 to 8 pm
Where: Navigate Arts @ the Old Tanja Church, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Road, Tanja
Cost: Tickets cost $90 and are available via Humanitix.
For one night, Tanja on the NSW Far South Coast will host four-piece reggae and salsa ensemble Mista Savona. There will also be food and drinks to keep participants full as they enjoy the performance. The concert doubles as a fundraiser for the Bermagui Survival Day initiative, sponsored by the Bega Multicultural Centre and Funhouse Studio.
Nethercote Produce Market
When: 27 January, 8 am to noon
Where: Nethercote Hall, corner of Nethercote and Back Creek roads, Nethercote
Cost: Free entry.
This is a market that is only held a few times a year, but has grown a loyal following. On Saturday, stallholders both old and new will be on hand selling a range of fresh foods, including apples, cabbages, potatoes, raspberries, shallots, tomatoes, kale and many other fruits and vegetables. The public can also get involved by donating any home-grown produce they have (if they don’t have enough for a stall) at Nethercote Hall before 8 am on market days. The proceeds of the event will be donated to food-related projects in the community.
INFERNO art expo
When: 27 January, 5 to 10 pm
Where: The Twyford, 16 Market Street, Merimbula

Defy – a creative collective of multi-media artists, DJs and other creatives – have come together for this art exhibition. The theme is grunge, and attendees are asked to pull out their best grunge look to wear as they check out the artworks.
Grapes of Mirth
When: 27 January, 2 to 8 pm
Where: Goolabri Estate, 202 Goolabri Drive, Sutton
Cost: Tickets cost $89 and are available via Moshtix.
Rhys Nicholson, Lizzy Hoo, Dave Thornton, Chris Ryan, Merrick Watts and DJ Pedro Moshman are big names in the comedy scene. This Saturday, they’re making the drive to Goolabri Estate for a night of wine and laughter – and you’re invited as well. Contentious Character will provide the wines and there will be food vendors on hand. The event is strictly 18+, and the tickets come with a wine glass you can take home. Attendees can bring their own picnic rugs and chairs.
