Construction of the new headquarters for pivotal emergency services in the Eurobodalla is well underway.
The NSW SES Batemans Bay Unit and the Surf Beach Rural Fire Brigade are getting a new, $3.9 million co-located facility in Surf Beach.
As of this week, a Eurobodalla Shire Council spokesperson said the bulk of the earthworks had been completed, but there were still more earthworks to prepare for the slab stage.
Surf Beach Brigade Captain Ashley Blackman said the earthworks were proceeding. It was his understanding the building phase would start in March 2023 and would be finished towards the end of the year, around the start of the bushfire season.
He said it felt good to get to this stage of the development and the brigade’s members were “very excited, they’re looking forward to it”.
Batemans Bay’s SES headquarters were destroyed in the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires.
When the construction of the new facility was announced, it was welcomed by NSW SES Eurobodalla local commander Mike Day.
“We’re very much looking forward to seeing construction materialise and even more excited for the build to conclude and for us to have a permanent home,” he said.
The headquarters is being built on council-owned land alongside the NSW Ambulance Station in Surf Beach, which will provide an easy access to George Bass Drive and thereby a rapid response to the northern end of Eurobodalla.
Construction began in August 2022 with clearing and earthworks.
