Scheduled works for a bridge in the Bega Valley Shire will require a road closure between Tathra and Bermagui for several days during work hours.
Bega Valley Shire Council will start maintenance of Wapengo Creek Bridge, which is at Wapengo, on Monday (18 July).
This will mean the Tathra-Bermagui Road will be closed to all traffic at the bridge from Tuesday to Friday (19 to 22 July) between 9 am and 3 pm each day.
A council spokesperson said the school bus that used the route would still operate at these times.
Message boards will be placed at Tarraganda, Mogareeka and Bermagui to notify road users of the closure. Traffic control will be stationed at the Tathra-Bermagui Road’s intersections with Doctor George Mountain Road and Cuttagee Beach Road.
Wapengo Creek Bridge is a single-lane timber bridge. A 2021 heritage assessment by Pip Giovanelli for the more well-known Cuttagee Bridge states both bridges were likely built at the same time, at the end of the 19th century.
The bridges were two of several that created a reliable road network from Tilba Tilba and Bermagui to Bega and Tathra, which linked the population, production and ports of the time.
