Jake Cartwright has said goodbye to the big smoke, gone back to his hometown of Batemans Bay and launched his own boutique law firm.
With years of city experience under his belt, Jake returned to the South Coast to be closer to family and friends and the regional lifestyle he grew up with just months before the devastating Black Summer bushfires.
It was a life-altering experience. Like many who lost their homes in the disaster, Jake reassessed what he was doing and how he was doing it.
Once back on his feet, he decided to strike out on his own and take legal services to his clients wherever and whenever they needed them.
“Going through the bushfires and then COVID certainly gives you a different perspective,” Jake said. “You realise how important it is for people to feel relaxed and comfortable when it comes to making big decisions.
“I’ve started a mobile legal service so I can meet people at their homes, after hours and on weekends, whenever suits them.
“There are a lot of older residents with mobility issues who might not be able to drive into town, so I’m happy to go to their home.
“And most people in this region work nine-to-five jobs so to save them taking time off work, I can meet with them after-hours or over the weekend.”
Jake has always been passionate about law, taking part in mock trials at high school before completing a double degree in law and science majoring in psychology at Wollongong University.
In fact, his first brush with the law was as a three-day-old baby when his journalist mum took him to a coronial inquiry at Moruya Courthouse. The judge even commended his good behaviour.
Growing up, Jake was heavily involved in the community and got to know many local faces during his Batemans Bay paper run – including some of the town’s established lawyers, who were quick to give him their tips.
He’s enjoying being back home and has bounced straight into the role as a coach and president of the Batemans Bay Basketball Association. He’s also looking forward to being closer to the ski slopes during the snow season.
A real people person, Jake looks forward to getting to know his clients and offering a flexible, personal service.
“As a small firm I’m really able to provide a high level of service from day one,” he said.
“Unlike larger legal firms, where a lot of the time senior solicitors meet with clients initially and then pass the work onto a junior staff member, I’m going to be carrying the file the whole time.
“It’s my firm and my personal details are accessible to everyone.”
Jake was admitted to the legal profession in 2017 and began his career working in personal law and immigration for a large firm in Sydney. He went on to join a mitigation firm in Wollongong before working closer to home in Nowra and Moruya.
Based in Batemans Bay, Jake’s mobile business will cover Bega to Wollongong. He’s providing the whole gamut of legal services – from conveyancing and property law to civil litigation and contract disputes.
“I can come to people’s homes and sit down with them, in their own time, to arrange their will, power of attorney, and enduring guardianship,” he said.
“And I’m really keen to get my teeth into some commercial law and help new businesses understand their requirements and get established in the region.”
