Award-winning winery Corang Estate, just off the Federal Highway, has opened a cellar door alongside the handmade art and craft at Creative Collection in Tarago.
Visitors can enjoy a guided wine tasting, followed by a glass of wine and mezze platter while browsing the creative work.
The fruit behind the wines is sourced from vineyards across the Southern Tablelands region, in addition to Corang Estate in Nerriga itself. All the wines are made in a shared winery in Murrumbateman.
Corrang Estate has been growing grapes for four years now. In that time, their wines have scored major awards since the first release, including Top Shiraz, Top Wine of Show and 2021 Hilltops Wine of the Year – and that’s just for their 2019 Hilltops Shiraz.
Owners Michael and Jill Bynon are the husband and wife team behind the success story. They have wanted to open a cellar door for some time and are delighted to have finally found the perfect spot in Tarago.
“We’re really excited to open our wine tasting space where customers can visit, learn about our wines and enjoy a glass either indoors or out the front,” Michael said.
“The location is ideal with the arts and crafts inside and the café next door, plus the pub across the road, we envisage other businesses will benefit from increased visitor numbers. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Michael has been in the wine industry for more than 30 years, starting as a barman and sommelier in his early 20s before progressing to Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia to qualify in wine business and production.
He built a solid career in wine sales before spending many years in senior corporate liquor roles. He has also travelled extensively to study the world’s great wine regions and passed the prestigious and world-revered Master of Wine Tasting examination.
Jill is a linguist and marketing professional, with studies in Europe leading to a keen appreciation for wine and food.
Their combined skills and a shared love of good wine, food and nature is the foundation on which Corang Estate was built.
The adjoining Creative Collection shop is stocked with locally handmade products, including jewellery, glassware, carved wooden items, sewn and knitted crafts, and a selection of Indigenous paintings.
Owners Megan Alcock and Clare Delaney are equally excited about the village’s new addition.
“We are very confident the Corang Estate cellar door will draw more visitors into the shop, helping to shine a light on our talented local artisans,” Megan said.
Corang Estate Cellar Door at 1-3 Braidwood Road in Tarago is open from Friday to Monday from 10 am to 4 pm. Wine tasting costs $10. Bookings are encouraged. Email [email protected] to book a table. Maximum of six in a group.
