Narooma’s BP station has been ordered to stop receiving fuel deliveries after a suspected leak was detected in an apartment across the street.
The Campbell Street petrol station is also under notice to remove remaining fuel from underground tanks.
It follows reports of a petrol odour inside one of The Wharf apartment buildings.
The smell was flagged last Thursday (19 May), with NSW Fire and Rescue crews discovering fuel seeping through the concrete walls of an elevator shaft in one of the apartment buildings.
A Eurobodalla spokesperson said the impacted residents have been relocated.
“Eurobodalla Council has since been working with the NSW Environment Protection Authority and the nearby petrol station to investigate the potential source of the fuel,” they said.
“Multiple inspections by Council staff have not identified further signs of fuel in the surrounding environment, including water and sewer systems.”
Eurobodalla Council has issued a ‘prevention notice’ to the owners of the BP fuel station under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1977. The spokesperson said it requires fuel deliveries immediately cease, and any remaining fuel be removed from all underground storage tanks.
“The owners are also required to engage qualified investigators within seven days to report on the integrity of the tanks, along with any contamination caused and remediation required,” they said.
“They have been cooperative to date.”
The town’s other fuel stations, Ampol and Shell, have not been impacted.
