Nine things to do in the region this week (11 – 17 March)

There’s lots to do this week in the region – especially if you love attending festivals, fairs, shows and celebrations.

On Friday, the Travelling Film Festival kicks off in Ulladulla and the Steampunk Victoriana Fair takes place in Goulburn.

On Saturday, the Cooma Show returns with a jam-packed program, Goulburn celebrates its 159th Birthday and a Boombox Party with live music and DJs take over the Moruya Waterfront Hotel Motel.

If all of that isn’t enough, on Sunday, one of the most colourful Indian festivals returns to Murrumbateman alongside Jeir Creek Wines. Following that is the Broulee Bay to Breakers annual swimming event down the South Coast and the Binalong Community Markets.

The annual National Sheepdog Trial Championships are also taking place from Monday next week.

Travelling Film Festival

When: Friday 11 March, sessions from 6:30 pm, Saturday 12 March, sessions from 10:30 am, Sunday 13 March, sessions from 11 am
Where: Arcadia Twin Cinemas, Rowens Arcade, Boree St, Ulladulla NSW

The Travelling Film Festival takes over Ulladulla this weekend with a great line-up offering the best in world cinema, including festival favourites, award-winning selections and 2022 Academy nominees. The program will showcase feature films, a documentary and three exceptional Australian short films from last year’s Sydney Film Festival and other major international festivals. The festival will kick off with the film ‘Here Out West’ and showcase other award-winning films such as the heart-warming French film ‘Petite Maman’ and ‘Parallel Mothers’, featuring the 2022 Academy nominee for best actress, Penélope Cruz.

Steampunk Victoriana Fair

The annual Steampunk Victoriana Fair is back in Goulburn for another family-friendly event filled with market stalls, music, food, art and lots of steam engines.
The two-day fair will also be showcasing pet parades, parasol duels, sword fighting, vintage games, teapot racing, art workshops, military displays, face painting, train rides, horse and carriage rides, a fire show, circus dinner show and lots of live music.

Cooma Show

Where: Cooma Showground, Cooma NSW
Cost: Single tickets and family tickets available from $10 per person and can be purchased at the main gate on the day.

The annual Cooma Show is back in 2022 with a jam-packed program filled with lots of fun for the whole family. There will be plenty of entertainment for everyone with cattle, sheep, poultry and main pavilion displays, live music by Jay Podger, Bubble Muffin kids cooking club, SES and RFS demonstrations, animal farms, dog fancy dress and high-jump competitions, wood chopping events, market stalls, dance performances, sideshow alleys and more.

City of Goulburn’s 159th Birthday

When: Saturday 12 March, from 10 am

Bring along your family and friends this Saturday to Belmore Park in Goulburn as it celebrates its 159th birthday. With celebrations taking place all day from 10 am, there will be a traditional cutting of the cake and guest speakers and speeches from the Mayor, Federal Member for Hume & Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor, as well as three Goulburn High School captains. This year’s birthday celebrations will also feature the first presentation of the Goulburn Mulwaree award.

Waterfront Saturdays – BoomBox Party

When: Saturday 12 March from 8 pm
Where: Moruya Waterfront Hotel Motel, 1-5 Princes Hwy, Moruya NSW
Cost: Tickets are $15 and can be purchased here.

After more than two years, Waterfront Saturdays has returned in Murrumbateman. With restrictions eased and dancing finally back, along with a great line-up of Canberra’s best crowd-pleasers. DJ sets from DJ Divito, Brittany De Marco and DJ Rawson are expected.

Holi Celebration – 2022 Festival of Colours With Jeir Creek Wines

When: Sunday 13 March, 11 am – 5 pm
Where: Jeir Creek Wines, 22 Bluebell Lane, Murrumbateman, NSW
Cost: Tickets are $50 which include snacks and a soft drink and can be purchased here.

This Sunday, for the second year in a row, one of the most colourful Indian festivals returns to Murrumbateman, alongside Jeir Creek Wines. The family-friendly event is open to all as it showcases traditional Indian foods and snacks such as pani puri, thandai, papadi chaat and samosas, as well as lots of music, wine tasting and colour.

Broulee Bay to Breakers

When: Sunday 13 March from 9 am
Where: Broulee Surfers, Surf Life Saving Club, Heath Street, Broulee
Cost: From $20 to $55, register here.

The Broulee Surf Life Saving Club is back with the annual Broulee Bay to Breakers swim taking place this Sunday and incorporating a 1.4-kilometre ocean swim from Shark Bay on Broulee Island to South Broulee Beach, and a 500-metre ocean swim for juniors to participate in.
Prizemoney will be given for first, second and third place, and for the fastest age group. Place medals will also be presented to junior swimmers.

Binalong Community Markets

When: Sunday 13 March, 10 am – 2 pm
Where: Cafe on Queen, 13 Queen Street, Binalong, NSW
Cost: Free entry.

If you haven’t been to Binalong for a while, why not stop by and check out their beautiful town and the unique markets held on every second Sunday of the month. It is located at the Cafe on Queen with plenty of great stalls to keep you and the family busy.

National Sheepdog Trial Championships

When: Monday 14 March to Sunday 20 March
Where: Hall Showground, 1-13 Hall Street, Hall, ACT
Cost: Free entry on Monday and Tuesday, tickets, $7.50 each day after and can be purchased here.

The National Sheep Dog Trial Championships commence on Monday 14 March at the Hall Showgrounds. The trials are a unique sport where sheep, dogs and people work together to complete a course of three obstacles in 15 minutes. This family-friendly event is free for all to attend on Monday and Tuesday, with ticketed entry required for the remaining days of the championship.
