Christmas is just around the corner so there is plenty of fun stuff happening in the region this week.

Jockeys will cling to their horses and jostle for silverware in races in Goulburn and Moruya, avid punters in boats will take to Lake Jindabyne, and the voices of angels will fill the centre of Cooma.

Learn the ins and outs of hanging pot plants in Moruya, or the basics of painting at Wallaga Lake (with some alcohol to help get the creativity flowing).

And if you still haven’t sorted all your Christmas gifts yet, this is the last call for late-night shopping in Yass.

Friday

Christmas Cup Race Day

When: Friday, 17 December, from 12 pm to 6 pm
Where: Goulburn Race Club, Racecourse Drive, Goulburn
Cost: Free.

The Christmas Cup horse racing comes to Goulburn as jockeys compete for the Fred Cooper Cup. Bring your picnic rug or reserve a marquee seat and enjoy the perfect opportunity to gather your friends, family and colleagues to celebrate the end of the year in style.

Cooma Christmas Carols

When: Friday, 17 December, from 7 pm
Where: Centennial Park, Sharp Street, Cooma
Cost: Free.

The sounds of Christmas will be filling the centre of Cooma this Friday night. Come along to enjoy the festive music.

Try your hand at dragon boating with Lake Jindabyne Snow Dragons. The morning event begins with a meeting at Jindabyne Sailing Club before teams head out to experience first hand the fun, thrill and excitement of dragon boating on Lake Jindabyne.

Macreme – Pot Hanger Workshop

Annette is an experienced teacher who trained at Frankfurt University and uses natural rope to create plant and wall hangers. She loves sharing her skills so in this two-hour workshop in Moruya you will learn all the basic knots to create a beautiful plant hanger to decorate your home.

Cooma Rotary Markets

When: Sunday, 19 December, from 8 am to 1 pm
Where: Centennial Park, Sharp Street, Cooma
Cost: Free.

Head down to Cooma Rotary Markets and enjoy the family atmosphere at Centennial Park this Sunday. There will be lots of stalls with local produce, arts and crafts, plants and plenty of items to buy as Christmas gifts, as well as great food and coffee.

Narooma Cup

When: Sunday, 19 December, from 12 pm to 6:30 pm
Where: 100 Donnelly Drive, Moruya
Cost: $10 for adults; free for under-18s – buy tickets here.

The Narooma Cup is running this Sunday at Moruya Jockey Club. On the day there will be bookies, TAB, a bar, coffee van and food, including from Cut and Run Pizza, Mi Taco Su Taco and Nomad Kitchen. For the kids there will be a jumping castle and ice-cream van. There is plenty of space for general admission, but it is recommended you bring your own seating.

Yass Valley Late-Night Shopping

When: Thursday, 23 December, from 6 pm
Where: Comur Street, Yass
Cost: Free entry.

The Yass Valley community has come together to prepare for Christmas and thank frontline workers with late-night shopping. There will be markets lining the town’s main street so you can browse and buy from other local vendors.
