Baby on board during alleged road rage incident involving pepper spray

A man and a woman with a six-week-old baby in their car were allegedly pepper-sprayed in a road rage incident near Tumut on Friday (3 December).

At about 1:15 pm, police from the Riverina Police District were called to Capper Street, Tumut, following reports of an incident between the passengers of two vehicles.

Police were advised that an altercation between the two parties had begun along the Snowy Mountains Highway just outside Tumut.

A Mitsubishi Triton with a 25-year-old male driving, and a 27-year-old female and a six-week-old baby as passengers, became involved in an altercation with occupants of a Mazda 6, a 20-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man.

Both vehicles stopped and the occupants of the Mazda 6 approached the Mitsubishi Triton before the male is believed to have sprayed them with pepper spray, before the two parties vacated the scene.

The occupants of the Mazda 6 were later located by police on Fitzroy Street, Tumut, shortly before 3:00 pm, where police allegedly located two canisters of pepper spray.

The male passenger of the Mazda 6 was arrested and taken to Tumut Police Station.

He was charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of possession or use of a prohibited weapon without a permit.

The female driver of the Mazda 6 was charged with one count of possession or use of a prohibited weapon without a permit and one count of stalk/intimidate intend fear of physical/mental harm.

The man was granted conditional bail while the woman was granted unconditional bail to appear at Tumut Local Court on Thursday, 13 January 2022.

There were no reports of serious injuries following the incident.
