It’s been nearly three years since the project was approved by Yass Valley Council, but it appears the “Bowning Supa Centre” is nearing the point of construction after an advertisement for four retail spaces being available for lease appeared online recently.
The project, situated at 27782 Hume Highway, Bowning, was approved for Albury-based developers the Barker Group at a council meeting on 27 February 2019. It has since been on-sold to a developer which registered as a Sydney-based private company under the name “Bowning Supa Centre Pty Ltd” in March of this year.
Agents from the Sydney office of JLL, Tim Osmani and Michael Antarakis were offering the four retail spaces online. There are currently two drive-through and two food court tenancies available.
Furthering the speculation that construction would begin at what they describe as a “major service centre development”, is the commitment to the Caltex petrol station opening in 2022 in the advertisement’s description.
Shop sizes range from 73 to 218 metres squared, with the shops designed for a “fast fitout” and deemed suitable for quick service restaurants, while the total facility will have a 210-person indoor and outdoor seating capacity.
Yass Valley Business Chamber President Jack Walker said the position of the organisation is that big business choosing to move into the Yass Valley is something to celebrate.
“We support big business coming into Yass Valley because of the benefits that it brings in terms of investment, but also job creation and additional services to the community.”
“Overall, without understanding the merit fully of the individual project, the Yass Valley Business Chamber is supportive of new businesses coming into the Yass Valley and we hope to see council supporting further businesses coming into the Yass Valley into the future.”
The project is one of three service centres planned for the Yass Valley.
A highway service centre as part of the new duplicated Barton Highway is in the early stages of planning in Murrumbateman, while a second Yass Service Centre opposite the current service centre is in the early stages of construction.
While not offering an opinion on those projects as a collective, Mr Walker would like to see Yass Valley Council take a more holistic approach to their planning in the region.
“I think masterplanning is essential and we need to see council get on the front foot with the range of masterplanning required across the whole Yass Valley.”
