An investigation over the alleged theft of two livestock trailers from the Monaro has led to a second arrest, the seizure of items valued at more than half-a-million dollars – and the rescue of a sick pig.
NSW Police from the Rural Crime Prevention Team said Strike Force Louarna was set up to investigate the alleged theft of livestock trailers in the local area.
As a result, a 29-year-old Canberra man was arrested charged on 26 July after two trailers were found on the Monaro Highway at Michelago.
“He was pursued on foot through several paddocks before running into a nearby dam,” police alleged at the time.
On Tuesday (10 August), police searched a property on Mulloon Road at Mulloon, about 20 km east of Bungendore.
Police seized four illegal guns, an allegedly stolen .22 calibre rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and six boxes of ammunition.
They also found 17 vehicles, a prime mover trailer, a boat, caravan, a bobcat, an electric bicycle and two trailers, all of which they alleged had been stolen.
“The value of the recovered property is estimated to be more than $500,000. The items seized will undergo further examination,” police said.
“Officers rescued a pig that was visibly unwell, which was surrendered to the RSPCA,” they said.
Police arrested a 50-year-old man at the property. He was charged with a range of matters including possessing an unregistered firearm, possessing ammunition without holding a permit, and receiving stolen property.
He appeared in Queanbeyan Local Court on Wednesday (11 August), where he was granted conditional bail to reappear before the same court on 5 October.
The 29-year-old has been refused bail and will appear in the Cooma Local Court on 22 September.
Police are continuing their investigation.
