After championing the importance of innovation in the future of regional communities on the ABC’s Q&A program last month, Ed Husic is coming to the Bega Valley today (April 29) to add his weight to Regional Innovation Week.
As the Federal Opposition’s spokesperson on Start-up’s and innovation, Mr Husic has made it clear that regional areas offer great potential.
“I feel really strongly about the fact that we need to broaden our innovation effort to involve the regions,” Mr Husic said on Q&A.
“We can use that to change economic opportunities,” he said.
Mr Husic went on to talk about an innovation economy that allows young regional people to stay local, providing a livelihood, economic opportunities and creative environment that competes with and betters what big cities have to offer.
“It’s this vision that drives Regional Innovation Week,” says Liam O’Duibhir, co-founder of 2pi Software and Into IT Sapphire Coast.
“We have this growing community of innovators that collaborate and support each other’s work, but Regional Innovation Week is about building future aspirations,”
“The region’s natural landscape is a big part of why we are here, and now we need to add in layers of technology and infrastructure that allow this innovation economy to grow further,” he says.
With the goal of creating 1000 innovation jobs in the Bega Valley by 2030, Regional Innovation Week pulls together the people and ideas that will make that happen.
As part of the program of events, Mr Husic will open the Co Working Space (CoWS) Creativity Suite in the heart of Bega, before speaking at the Hackathon in Merimbula.
The CoWS Creativity Suite will be a hub for those wanting to fuse the arts, culture and imagination with the local tech community. It will be home to a digital media bar, audio station, coding cave and 3D kitchen.
Drop by for a look and to explore the possibilities, it’s upstairs at 209 Carp Street Bega. Today’s (April 29) opening is at 1:45pm.
Mr Husic and Labor’s candidate for Eden-Monaro Dr Mike Kelly will also host a panel discussion on themes around regional innovation, getting underway at 12 noon at the Club Bega. They’ll be joined by a number of Innovation Week experts.
Innovation is a key theme in the current economic and political climate and Regional Innovation Week makes the Bega Valley part of that agenda.
