A NSW Police strike force is investigating the death of a 32-year-old man from Batemans Bay who was found lying face down in a waterway at a property just off Island Point Road in St Georges Basin.

The man was found shortly after 9:00 am on Wednesday (29 April).

The body has been formally identified as a 32-year-old man from Batemans Bay. He was believed to be staying with relatives in the area prior to his death. Police are treating the death as suspicious.

Strike Force Wilkin has been established with investigators from the South Coast Police District, assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

Superintendent Greg Moore said investigations into the cause of the man’s death were continuing. He urged anyone with information about his final hours to come forward.

“We have not confirmed the cause of the man’s death. We are keeping an open mind and are interested in hearing from anyone who may have had contact with him on the evening of Tuesday, April 28 or the early hours of Wednesday, April 29,” Supt Moore told media on 1 May.

“We will know more once the post mortem has been completed.”

Investigators would also like to speak to anyone who had contact with the man in or around Idlewild Avenue, Sanctuary Point in the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, 28 April.

Police have not confirmed the identification of the man, who is described as being of Caucasian appearance, approximately 170 cm tall with short brown hair. He was found wearing dark pants, blue shoes and a black long sleeve shirt with circular symbols on the front and rear shoulder.

Anyone with information is urged to contact South Coast police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
