Raiders centre Curtis Scott has been cleared to play in Canberra’s round one clash against the Titans after the NRL confirmed they would not stand him down under their ‘no-fault policy’.
Scott is charged with seven offences including assaulting police and resisting arrest. He was arrested and tasered by police on the Australia Day long weekend.
Under the NRL’s no-fault stand down rule, a player facing serious criminal offences with a maximum jail term of 11 years or more is automatically stood down.
Scott is facing a maximum of five years behind bars if found guilty.
The decision should in no way be interpreted as a view on Scott’s innocence or guilt, the NRL said in a statement.
“Having considered the charges against Scott, the NRL has determined that he should not be prevented from playing whilst he responds to them,” the NRL said.
“The NRL regards the charges as extremely serious and the Raiders have been advised Scott will face a significant penalty if found guilty of the charges.”
Scott has pleaded not guilty and will face court on 20 March. The Raiders open their 2020 campaign next Friday (13 March).
