Hilltops Mayor Brian Ingram has told About Regional that he is proud of the efforts of people in the Hilltops region – which includes Boorowa, Harden, Young and Jugiong – in supporting communities devastated by fires in recent weeks.
“It’s a sign of a good community when volunteers come out and put whatever they are doing to one side to go to help others,” he said.
“I know it has impacted on some financially to do this – and I know that is the last thing on their minds – but it is something to be considered and appreciated,” he said.
While Cr Ingram has been keeping one eye on Hilltops Local Government Area, another close eye has been focused on his former hometown of Delegate which has been facing off against the out-of-control W Tree bushfire.
“I’ve been having conversations with a few people down there,” he said.
“It was a real concern down there – I think at 10 am on Saturday (4 January) the skies were literally black – but luckily the winds shifted.
Apart from a few small blazes – primarily grass and haystack fires – during December, he maintains luck has played a part in keeping the Hilltops region safe from fire.
“We’ve been pretty fortunate up here so far,” the mayor said.
He hopes the giving spirit of the Hilltops community will continue to shine through in coming months to help those suffering in fire-affected areas of the state.
To this end, Cr Ingram has established establishment of a bushfire Mayoral Relief Fund which he hopes will see vital funds directed to recovery and rebuilding efforts.
“Money is what will be needed to help, it’s going to take a long time for most of these communities to recover – a lot of infrastructure has been lost,” he said.
“I’m just going to keep it open and hope the cash keeps trickling in,”
Donations are tax deductible and can be deposited to the following account or at any Hilltops Council Office. 100 per cent of proceeds will go directly to those in need.
