Snowy Monaro Regional Councillors have elected a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

At an Extraordinary Council Meeting held this evening (September 2), Councillor Peter Beer was elected as Mayor ahead of Councillor James Ewart.

A vote for deputy mayor was held with Councillor Lynley Miners re-elected into the role ahead of Councillor John Castellari.

Mayor Peter Beer and Deputy Mayor Lynley Miners see out the term of this council in the top jobs, with the next local government elections in September 2020.

In his regular newsletter, outgoing Mayor John Rooney wished his successor all the best.

“In the two years, I have been mayor of Snowy Monaro Regional Council, I have been honoured to represent the people of this wonderful region,” Cr Rooney said.

“I feel extremely privileged to have been the inaugural mayor of the Snowy Monaro and I have enjoyed meeting many people in my travels throughout the region.

“Working closely with the state government, this council has been able to achieve better outcomes for the region.

“The region has a bright future and I wish the incoming mayor and deputy mayor all the best as they represent the Snowy Monaro.”

Snowy Monaro Regional Council General Manager, Peter Bascomb, congratulated the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor on their appointments.

“I’d like to wish Councillor Beer and Councillor Miners the very best for their one- year term as Mayor and Deputy Mayor,” Mr Bascomb says.

More to come.

Of course Mayor Rooney was elected out, he is from Michelago. Thank yoy Mayor Rooney for all you have done for the region. I fear Michelago will once again be on the back burner for council. Cooma is the priority for council
