Two of the region’s best young Aussie Rules players are about to take charge of the Bega Bombers Auskick program.
Auskick is designed to improve the hand, eye coordination skills of local boys and girls from the age of just five years.
Based on a number of fun games designed to keep every child engaged, the Bomber’s program kicks off on Tuesday (May 7 ) with 16-year-old Khama Geisler and 15-year-old Amelie Gautier in control.
Khama has won the club’s best and fairest player award and Amelie has just completed a development course with the South East Sports Academy.
“We’re very proud of these young people,” says Bomber’s President Stephen Nicol.
“They’ve attended the briefing program in their own time and the youngsters who attend and their parents couldn’t wish for better tutors.”
Stephen says that while the Auskick program is part of the AFL structure it takes a unique approach to the development of coordination skills.
“The important thing is that the games change constantly,” Stephen says
“So that the youngsters are constantly stimulated and that no one is left out. Parents are invited to be involved too and things work better if parents and children are playing together.
“The program takes the children’s physical size and their coordination level into account so it’s possible a well-coordinated seven year old will be playing with nine-year-olds while a smaller boy or girl who has yet to develop will be playing with youngsters of comparable skills.”
The Bomber’s Auskick program is linked with the club’s under ten team run by one of Bega’s best fellas – Rod McDonald. At this age boys and girls play non-competitive games against other clubs and the kids get the thrill of running out in the club colours.
“The whole system is designed to encourage youngster’s development and confidence and our experience is that the kids love it,” Stephen says.
The Bomber’s Auskick program runs every Tuesday afternoon at Roy Howard Oval, under the Bega Bridge, and is open to girls and boys between the ages of five and ten years.
The cost is $100 which can be covered by the NSW Government’s Active Kids Voucher. The first week of the program begins on Tuesday (May 7) but kids and families can join at any time during the season.
