There’s a lot to see and do across the regions this week – read on for more info on all the best art, theatrical performances, music and more.

The annual Far South Film Festival is on in Merimbula, showing off regional filmmaking in short and feature length films. This is a great chance to see what local creatives can do.

Beloved tribute act Killer Queen brings the magic of the original band to the Goulburn Performing Arts Centre for one night.

In Batemans Bay a special theatrical performance will tell the story of a trio’s attempt to save their favourite haunt from destruction in Waltzing the Wilarra.

Van Den Hooven Art Exhibition at the Bay Pavilions

When: 15 to 21 August, during normal gallery hours
Where: Batemans Bay Pavilions, 12 Vesper St, Batemans Bay
Cost: Free.

Van Den Hooven’s works, now on display at the Bay Pavilions, are a fascinating collection of expressionist works exploring identity and inner complexity. Showcased in the Clyde Gallery, this is a great chance for locals to see works from an emerging artist with a unique perspective within the artistic tradition he has chosen. These abstract works ask you to investigate and see the individual images that make up the whole work, drawing focus to different planes of the art.

Far South Film Festival

Far South Film Festival

When: 15 and 16 August

Each August, the Far South Film Festival brings together regional filmmakers from around the country to show off their works. Produced by Far South Film Inc, a non-profit association of professional and emerging filmmakers, this festival will feature short films under 40 minutes and feature films under 90 minutes in length.

This year’s festival will feature screenings, awards and Q&A sessions where aspiring filmmakers can ask the directors and filmmakers about their works. The best film will take a $1000 prize and there are other prizes in separate categories.

Charles Weyman exhibition paintings and drawings

When: 15 August, 5 to 11 pm; 17 August, 1 to 5 pm; and 21 August, 5 to 8 pm
Where: Goulburn Club, 19 Market Street, Goulburn
Cost: Free.

The Goulburn Club hosts the drawings and paintings of artist Charles Weyman from 9 August to 5 October, giving locals a chance to enjoy the works, both old and new, of the artist. Known for supporting local performers, the Goulburn Club also hosts regular art exhibitions, putting regional artists front and centre. Don’t miss out on this chance to see some great local art this week.

Killer Queen: Tribute show at the Goulburn Performing Arts Centre

For 20 years, Killer Queen has been bringing the magic of Queen to the masses, with knockout performances that have earned the group an international touring show and the reputation as one of the country’s finest tribute acts. Having shared the bill with the likes of Journey, Twisted Sister and Thin Lizzy, their talent has been recognised across the music world. This live show will let audience members experience all the best hits from Queen, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions, Another One Bites the Dust and many more.

Tom Henry at the Steampacket

Cost: Free.

Tom Henry is coming to the Steampacket Hotel this Saturday to play a mix of acoustic covers of old and new songs from pop, blues, folk, indie and rock. His easy listening sound will be the perfect backdrop for a great evening at the Steampacket.

Come enjoy a local artist at a local joint.

Sunday

Moruya Jockey Club Registered Clubs Race Day

When: 17 August, noon to 5 pm
Where: Moruya Jockey Club, 100 Donnelly Dr, Moruya
Cost: Free entry for current members of registered clubs between Narooma and Mollymook.

The Moruya Jockey Club is opening up for a full day of racing, with races from 1:10 to 5 pm and plenty of entertainment and excitement.

With a bar, TAB, bookies, an ice cream cafe, pizza, a kiosk, coffee van, hot dogs, DJs, a free jumping castle and free kids face painting, there’s plenty for the whole family to get excited for if the thrill of the track and the crack of the starting gun aren’t enough.

And of course there is fashion on the field, with prizes for best dressed boys and girls, best dressed man, best dressed lady and best dressed couple.

Willie And The Correspondents Live At The Twyford

Country/folk band Willie and the Correspondents come to The Twyford to perform a great selection of original songs, covering everything from the struggles of country living, family ties, past love and nostalgia.

Regional NSW musicians, Willie and the Correspondents tell stories rooted in country life.

Waltzing the Wilarra

This special performance at the Batemans Bay Pavilions takes the audience back to the 40s in post-war Perth, to the heart of an integrated club where black and white meet, sing and dance. Representing a rarity in the segregated world of mid-century Australia, the club is a cherished memory for its patrons who must unite 40 years later to save the club from demolition. Three characters meet and stage a musical reunion and protest the planned destruction of the setting of many of their most beloved memories.

Secrets and lingering ghosts are revealed as our trio saves their club.

Gutsy Girls Adventure Film Tour 2025

This exhilarating screening shows off female adventurers pushing boundaries and forging new paths. This showing at the Jindabyne Cinema is a two-and-a-half hour extravaganza of six extraordinary short films capturing the intense world of mountaineering women in the alps, mountain biking with legend of the trail Robin Goomes, cave diving with Jill Heinerth, as well as BASE jumping and snowboarding.
