Few South Coast traditions have stood the test of time quite like the Moruya Rodeo.
This event has been around for almost 55 years, and has a way of turning a sleepy summer afternoon into an incredible shared experience.
It’s loud, lively, and yes, pretty dusty, but there’s no denying the strength of spirit in the air. That’s what keeps the masses coming back year after year, and 2026 will be no different.
Visitors of all ages are invited to join the festivities at Moruya Showground from 1 pm on 1 January. Tickets are capped at 4000 to ensure everyone can enjoy the full rodeo experience, so get in quick to avoid disappointment.
Moruya Rodeo Committee assistant secretary Aimee Mehl describes the event as a proud local tradition that has been passed down through generations.
“Founding families and younger enthusiasts have kept our rodeo alive and beloved by our communities,” she says.
“I love that the Moruya Rodeo is a day that everyone can enjoy!”
If it’s been a while since you attended, expect the same fun-filled community atmosphere — only bigger, bolder and with even higher stakes.
With a prize pool worth more than $25,000 on offer, competition will be fierce and the riding standards high.

Moruya Rodeo merchandise is also up for grabs, including truckie caps and stubby holders, which were in high demand last time around. Photo: Aimee Mehl.
Both old hands and new blood are set to take on some of the best bucking bulls in the country. There’ll be barrel racing, saddled and bareback broncos, roping challenges, and more to cheer for.
Keep an eye out in the arena for Big Al the rodeo clown, whose classic antics are sure to get a good laugh.
Outside the arena, expect sideshow games, market stalls packed with western clothes and gear, and plenty of fair-style food and sweets to keep the masses fed.
After the main event, visitors can stick around for live music by Blue Mountains country band CK & The 45s.
At its heart, the Moruya Rodeo is all about community.
Everyone has a part to play in making the day great — from committee members and local businesses to competitors, their families, and of course, the spectators.
“A huge amount of hard work goes on behind the scenes to make an event like this possible. It’s a day that means a lot to so many people,” Aimee says.
“Competitors get to showcase their skills, visitors have the time of their lives, and proud sponsors see their businesses supported and promoted by their community.
“That sense of shared effort and pride is reflected in our numbers each year when a sold-out crowd flocks through the gates.”
The 2026 Moruya New Year’s Day Rodeo is set for Thursday, 1 January, 2026, at Moruya Showground. Gates open at 1 pm, with the main event kicking off at 4 pm.
Ticket prices are $30 for adults and $15 for children, with kids under nine admitted free.
There is no guarantee of tickets being available at the gate. Moruya Rodeo recommends securing your spot online — you can do so via ticketebo.
