The creation of a new winter wonderland as part of Selwyn Snow Resort’s post-bushfire rebirth will be the first of its kind in Australia, and it is hoped it will inspire an entire new generation of snow enthusiasts.
A miniature enchanted village, skating rink and children’s snowmobiles are just the tip of the iceberg in plans that media and entertainment company Blyton Group – Selwyn Snow Resort’s lessees – has been finessing since the resort was destroyed in the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-2020.
The NSW Government’s announcement, on Monday, 8 March, that an agreement has been reached on a new 40-year lease for the resort, which lies east of the Snowy Mountains, near Cabramurra, means reconstruction can begin with the transformation to include brand new guest facilities, expanded state-of-the-art snowmaking, upgraded lifts and a range of exciting new products for sightseers and snow players.
Selwyn Snow Resort’s regulars, well versed in the quirks of the old resort, will be high-fiving their way to the contemporary new L-shaped terrain-hugging Selwyn Centre which will house all guest facilities and services under one roof, including expanding ski and snowboard hire, enhanced food and drink offerings and improved toilet amenities.
And when it comes to the snow, it will be all about play as skiers can glide down the surrounding slopes; families can ride the tubing carousel and trifle with a toboggan in a park featuring a dedicated 150-metre snow carpet; and the adventurous can find their snow feet snowshoeing through Kosciuszko National Park.
Selwyn will be the first snow resort in the Southern Hemisphere to install new TechnoAlpin TT10 snow machines which, thanks to their next-generation technology, will enable snowmaking at temperatures more than two degrees warmer than the previous system, and will more than double the resort’s snowmaking capability.
The snow sports learning area will be relocated and expanded with the installation of two new dedicated snow carpets for skiers to perfect their turns on.
Blyton Group chairman Kevin Blyton said the announcement of the new lease is a major step in the resort’s rebuild.
“In the aftermath of the fires, we committed to building a bigger and better Selwyn, and we meant it,” he said. “I’m very pleased the long-term future of Selwyn Snow Resort has been secured.
“The commitment we are making is a significant financial investment, over and above any insurance proceeds.
“It is a sign of my group’s commitment to the long-term future of the resort.”
Mr Blyton said the new vision for the future of the resort would deliver on key objectives for tourism, product development and economic growth by providing new quality recreational activities, facilities and experiences that guests will love for generations to come.
“Selwyn Snow Resort has been the place for thousands of families to learn to ski or snowboard over the years, and I’m very pleased this will continue for generations to come,” he said.
While an announcement on the reopening timeframe for the resort is still months away, Blyton Group’s chief operating officer Josh Elliott said the rebuilt resort will be worth the wait.
“We believe the new Selwyn will deliver exciting, innovative and targeted new product offerings not currently on offer anywhere else in NSW,” he said. “We are fully focused on the rebuild and are excited for the future of the resort.”
