Over the past 120 years, it’s played host to mayoral soirees, glamorous garden parties and family celebrations, but soon another chapter will come to an end – and another will start – in the colourful story of Goulburn’s Redhouse.
Master-built by the former Mayor of Goulburn Leonard Holloway around 1900, the unique red brick and tile Federation home sits proudly on a 1591 square metre block surrounded by magnificent lawns and fully landscaped mature gardens.
Just moments from the bustling town centre, Redhouse at 45 Eldon Street in Goulburn retains loads of period features, including three marble fireplaces, stunning stained glass windows and doors, intricate ceiling roses and cornices, plus grand sandstone lintels above the windows.
Baden and Susan Miller have called this spectacular and unique property home for the past eight years.
They’re sad to be selling, but it’s time for them to downsize and move to the coast.
Baden says they’ve made some wonderful family memories at Redhouse, from Christmas dinners in the huge formal lounge room to evening garden parties on the private lawns in spring and summer.
He hopes another family will fall in love with the property, which has only had four owners since it was built by Leonard Halloway, who also built the Grafton Gaol in the 1890s, the Moss Vale Courthouse and many other stately buildings around the Goulburn area.
The Halloway family lived in the home until the mid-1960s and it has played host to many community and family events, including mayoral dinners, weddings and lavish garden parties.
It’s an iconic heritage-listed property and was Goulburn’s first home with a red tile roof, earning its name, the Redhouse.
From the moment you walk through the imposing front gate, complete with engraved sandstone lintel, you can feel the warmth and history of this impressive home.
The timber kitchen with slate flooring and two bathrooms have been modernised, and the home boasts huge formal living and lounge rooms, four large bedrooms upstairs and a cosy sunroom.
Sales agent Ed Zammit from Mylonas Property Solutions Goulburn says the leadlight glass front door opens onto a wide elegant hallway offering spectacular views.
“The large formal lounge room has a leadlight glass door leading to the front veranda and the original beautiful timber stairway leads to the bedrooms upstairs.
“The impressive formal dining room comes with an American Thomasville 12-seater timber dining suite and sideboard.”
The bathroom features a spa bath and the large eat-in kitchen has stone benchtops and an island bench inlaid with mother of pearl and black stone sink.
The original maids’ quarters have been converted into a laundry room and the home also boasts a wine cellar.
Outside, among the tiered landscaping, are garden and storage sheds, a chook pen and plenty of off-street parking, including a carport.
Mr Zammit says the home also enjoys proximity to schools, the post office and the historical Goulburn church precinct.
“It’s immediately comfortable with scope to add to a piece of Goulburn’s history,” he added.
“Privately sheltered from the street, this character home has been beautifully restored and is waiting for a new family to move in.”
