A Southern Tablelands council is starting work on a new reservoir, but there’s a long way to go before the project is finished.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council (GWC) recently announced it was moving forward with the Marulan Water Reservoir Project to help ensure the growing town’s water supply.

Site preparation works are to start later this month and continue into late February 2026.

“This stage involves essential groundwork in preparation for reservoir construction, including vegetation clearing, tree removal, fence installation, and building an internal access road,” a council spokesperson said.

The reservoir will be built at a site accessible through the corner of Dorsett and Suffolk roads.

A council spokesperson said this stage of the works involved further planning, which would take several months to complete.

“The site preparation works are expected to continue until February 2026, mainly due to the mandatory environmental assessment required before any groundwork can begin,” the spokesperson told Region.

“Given the project’s location, this process involves obtaining all necessary documentation and approvals, which can take several months.

“As a result, the timeline for completing this stage has been estimated to extend through February 2026.”

GWC has said there will be no interruption to the water supply during the works.

Once the site preparation is completed, the council is expected to move on to the reservoir’s construction.

This stage of the project, which will include the detailed design and construction of the reservoir tanks, is expected to be finished by late June 2027.

“Further details regarding the reservoir’s design and operation, including drawings and construction information, will be made available during Stage 2,” the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, GWC has also allocated millions towards upgrades to nearby water infrastructure.

The Marulan Water Treatment Plant upgrade has been allocated $13.9 million, while the Marulan Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade has received more than $30 million, according to the council’s Operational Plan for 2025-26.

An additional $6.6 million has been put towards replacing Marulan’s sewerage network, the document states.

The reservoir site preparation works are expected to occur from 7 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, and 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays.

No work will be scheduled for public holidays.

Traffic management measures will be in place. Motorists can also monitor Live Traffic for updates on road measures.
