Narooma School of Arts (NSoA) has lodged a development application (DA) for the new design of the Narooma Arts Centre (NAC) with the Eurobodalla Shire Council.
“We’re now hoping for a swift passage through Council’s DA process to ensure our long-awaited arts centre is built within the project’s time frame set by the funding authorities,” NSoA president Jenni Bourke said. “The Narooma community has about $8.5 million of funding at stake with this project.”
NAC is a community initiative on community-owned land.
Mrs Bourke said the community and successive volunteer committees had worked diligently on this project for more than 12 years.
“It had to be completely redesigned over the past year because the cost of construction of the original design would have exceeded available funds due to delays and cost increases beyond the School of Arts’ control,” she said.
“I know that once the centre is built, our community will wonder how we ever did without it. It will be such a vibrant centre of creativity, learning and gathering which will benefit the whole region, as well as bring economic benefits from cultural tourism, training and job opportunities.”
NAC’s design by Takt Studio for Architecture will include two multi-use studios/rooms, a large gallery and a small cafe.
The NAC project is funded by the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.
