If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your own vineyard among rolling green hills then a property for sale for $699,000 in the heart of the Bega Valley could make all your wishes come true.
Featured on River Cottage Australia, as well as local and Canberra region marketing campaigns, the 25-acre property at 46 Terlich Road, Verona, comes with a renovated three-bedroom cottage and is only 25 minutes’ drive from the beach.
The vineyard has about 2,200 established vines consisting of Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache with a yearly capacity of six tonnes and a potential yearly income ranging between $30,000 and $60,000.
Rescue helicopter pilot Euan McKenzie and retired soldier Carlin Stanford bought the property and put their first vines in the ground back in 2009 and have turned it into an idyllic home for themselves and their daughters which they will find difficult to leave.
At the time Euan was armed with a degree in Oenology and Viticulture from Margaret River, and he and Carlin were able to put into action their dream of planting vines and creating a winery using bio-dynamic agricultural methods.
They established ‘Together Wines’, and have built a business which produces a range of quality wines derived from grapes that are grown, hand-picked and produced on the farm. Their wines have a strong following both locally and interstate, with a number of restaurants and independent bottle shops in Sydney, Batemans Bay and the Bega Valley all liking to stock them.
“It’s beautiful land. It produces lovely wine,” Carlin told Region Media.
“It’s got so much potential for the right people.”
Carlin said that she, Euan and their two daughters have loved living at the property and are very proud of what they have achieved in a relatively short amount of time. However, with their daughters getting older and Euan working part-time in Canberra, they have found that they don’t have the time to give the property “all that it deserves”.
“We really want people to take it over and make this what we dreamt it could be,” Carlin said.
The property’s character-filled cottage provides a home among the vineyards and has a newly-renovated bathroom and kitchen complete with Caesar stone bench tops and top-of-the-range appliances.
For the cooler days, the home benefits from a beautiful stone feature fireplace and double glazed windows which boast stunning rural views of the Murrabrine and Mumbulla Mountains.
The property has mains power connected but, with self-sufficiency in mind, it also has 1kw solar power, as well as several raised vegetable gardens, a chook pen and more than 30 varieties of fruit trees.
Construction has also almost finished on a new straw bale winery and the property has a 100-year-old dairy complete with power and water.
Water is actually in abundance at the property with several sources including a spring fed dam, a bore and the Katchencarry Creek which runs along the southern boundary.
Carlin said the property has lovely views and “just nurtures you”.
“It wraps you up, this place,” said Carlin. “It’s very private and you feel like you’re part of something very special.”
The property is located under three hours’ drive from Canberra and around 25 minutes from the beaches of Bermagui and the centre hub of the Bega Valley.
