A sculpture created by one of Australia’s most recognised artists and donated by philanthropist Basil Sellers OAM, will soon be installed in pride of place at Moruya.
The $100,000 gift to the Eurobodalla community was commissioned by Mr Sellers to further enrich The Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre which has fast become a must-see attraction on the south-east arts circuit since opening in 2019.
It follows Mr Sellers’ generous donation towards construction of the shire’s first purpose-built art exhibition space, also known as The Bas.
The sculpture, created by Terrance Plowright OAM, will be visible from the Princes Highway at the corner of Vulcan and Campbell Streets and will serve as a way-finding marker for The Bas.
Mr Plowright has created fine art for more than 30 years. In 2019 he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to the arts, notably in sculpture.
The artist’s contemporary and figurative works are installed throughout Australia and overseas from a larger-than-life bronze Elvis in Parkes and the Life from a Suitcase sculpture at Pyrmont, Sydney, to the Dancing Brolgas water feature at Darling Harbour and Life Teeming-Life Teaming, a contemporary stainless steel sculpture at Bondi, to name just a few.
Eurobodalla Council’s community, arts and recreation director Kathy Arthur said Mr Plowright visited Eurobodalla in mid-2020 and collected material for the local piece titled “Ocean”.
“This sculpture will be an incredible addition to council’s art collection and we are once again so thankful to Mr Sellers for his invaluable support of the arts in Eurobodalla,” she said.
“Mr Sellers’ substantial gift to the community will assist with Eurobodalla’s growing reputation as a premier creative arts destination.”
It is hoped the sculpture will be ready for installation in July 2021.
