An accused burglar has been refused bail after he allegedly stole a police car on a Bungendore street, before police fired upon their own vehicle.
The incident that began on Friday (7 March) resulted in a cross-border manhunt as police chased the alleged culprit into the ACT.
Police were called to the main street of the NSW town of Bungendore, Malbon Street, at around 2:20 am that morning over reports of a break and enter, a NSW Police spokesperson said.
Officers arrived and found a man inside a business on the street.
During the ensuing struggle to arrest him, he allegedly punched an officer in the head. Also, while they fired a taser at him, it failed to stop him.
He then allegedly got into a nearby police car and drove towards the two officers.
One of the officers fired their gun, hitting the passenger door of the police car.
The accused burglar then allegedly drove the car towards the ACT.
Officers with ACT Policing soon found the police car at the intersection of Canberra Avenue and Geelong Street in Fyshwick.
Nothing was missing from the vehicle.
Then at about 10 am on Sunday (9 March), ACT Policing officers arrested a 24-year-old man inside a car parked on Rosenthal Street, Campbell, in the ACT.
He faced the ACT Magistrates Court the next day (Monday) where an application for extradition to NSW was granted.
He was taken to Queanbeyan Police Station and handed 13 charges over the alleged incident in Bungendore.
He then faced Goulburn Local Court where he was formally refused bail to appear in the Queanbeyan Local Court on 5 May.
The man’s charges include break and enter, entering vehicle or boat without the consent of owner/occupier, larceny, driving while disqualified, assaulting a police officer, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and possessing a prohibited drug.
