Bega Valley Shire Council has started work on improving functionality, accessibility and infrastructure in the Pambula Beach Surf Club precinct.
As part of council’s ‘Bega Valley Shire – A Destination for All’ plan to put southeast NSW and the Bega Valley Shire on the map as a leader in accessible tourism, improvements will be made at Pambula Beach, the Bruce Steer Pool at Bermagui and Merimbula’s Short Point.
The work will include improvements and additions to paths, accessible parking, a new playspace and outdoor gym, new amenities and picnic and barbecue areas.
The rugged nature of the NSW South Coast defines its identity, but these same characteristics can restrict and, in many cases, completely prevent members of the community with mobility limitations from enjoying the activities many people take for granted.
Council’s leisure and recreation manager, John Grady, said the Pambula Beach project was devised to add functionality and key infrastructure to improve accessibility and make the most of the relatively flat site.
“It great to see works getting underway,” he said. “The project will make the most of the site to see improved accessibility and recreation use for both locals and visitors.”
Local contractor Guideline South Coast has started civil works, while the contracts for the playspace, outdoor gym and amenities block are set to be awarded in the near future. The project is expected to be completed in time for the summer holidays.
The ‘Bega Valley Shire – A Destination for All’ program is funded by council and the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund, and will cost $2.3 million.
