A Canberra man has been arrested after he allegedly drove a ute onto the footpath in a South Coast town, ran into a 16-year-old boy and fled the scene.
Emergency services were contacted after a pedestrian was hit by a white Toyota Hilux on the footpath at Parsons Street in Ulladulla on Sunday morning (25 January), a NSW Police spokesperson said.
The ute, which was apparently seen with ACT registration plates, drove away without stopping.
The pedestrian, a 16-year-old boy, was treated at the scene before he was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a critical condition.
“Police were informed that the boy was in company with several other persons when he was struck by the Hilux,” the police spokesperson said.
Shortly before midnight on Sunday, it is alleged police saw the same Hilux travelling south on the Princes Highway at East Lynne.
The ute was stopped on Mount Agony Road, and the 27-year-old male driver from Canberra underwent a breath test, which allegedly returned a positive reading.
Officers also allegedly found a knife, and a small amount of cocaine and ecstasy in the car.
When the man was taken to Batemans Bay Police Station, a breath analysis allegedly returned a reading of 0.091.
“A drug test allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine and ecstasy, which will undergo further analysis before any further action is taken,” the spokesperson said.
The man was handed 11 charges, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact that caused grievous bodily harm, not giving particulars to an injured person, as well as drink and drug driving.
He faced the local court on Monday (26 January) where he was granted bail on conditions including he live in the Belconnen region, report to Belconnen Police Station three times a week and remain at home under a curfew unless in the company of his parents.
He is also not allowed to drink alcohol or take drugs nor drive a vehicle.
The man, who is not named for the time being, was scheduled to face Batemans Bay Local Court on 23 February.
