Officer attacked by group, two more assaulted, say police

Police were performing their jobs on the NSW South Coast when an incident allegedly spiralled into violence, resulting in three officers being assaulted.

One of these officers was even allegedly gang-bashed when set upon by a group.

A NSW Police spokesperson said officers were called to Gipps Street in Bega around midday on Tuesday (11 November) over reports of “alleged drug activity”.

They tried to talk to a 26-year-old man, who had been seen speaking with several people sitting in a parked car, but he refused to cooperate so they stopped him and allegedly found he was carrying about four grams of meth.

When they arrested him, he allegedly armed himself with a hammer and unsuccessfully tried to flee.

Meanwhile, the four occupants of the parked car – two men aged 34 and 40 and two women aged 33 and 44 – allegedly surrounded a male constable and assaulted him.

All four were arrested before the 40-year-old man allegedly punched a male sergeant in the face, knocking him to the ground and causing him to hit his head on the concrete. He was left with a cut near his eye.

A 64-year-old woman was also arrested after she arrived at the scene and allegedly obstructed officers.

Lastly, a senior constable allegedly received grazing injuries when trying to arrest a 30-year-old man, who arrived at the scene and also allegedly tried to obstruct the arrests.

“A search of the vehicle allegedly located a quantity of drugs, an extendable baton, a prohibited weapon, drug paraphernalia and scales,” the police spokesperson said.

“All seven people were taken to taken to Bega Police Station.”

The 40-year-old man, 34-year-old man, 30-year-old man and all three women were charged with or will be issued charges of assaulting police, among others.

The 26-year-old man was charged with supplying a prohibited drug.

Several were refused bail to appear in court on Wednesday (12 November), others were granted bail or scheduled to face court on different dates between November and December.
