One Princes Highway upgrade is preparing to begin, and work is continuing on plans for another project, as part of efforts to make the major road safer for travellers and locals.

Moruya’s Malabar Drive intersection with the highway will receive several upgrades. These include extending the existing northbound overtaking lane by about 550 metres and realigning the intersection so that it meets current road design standards.

The road itself will be widened to accommodate the longer overtaking lane (and widened shoulders), improvements will be carried out on the road surface and drainage measures, roadside flexible steel rail barriers will be reinstalled and the existing one-metre-wide centreline will be reinstated.

Work starts on the stretch of highway between Malabar Drive and Shelley Road on Tuesday, 2 September, from 6 am to 6 pm on weekdays.

Saturday works (between 7 am and 6 pm) will be carried out from 20 September.

“Single-lane closures, a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h and stop/slow traffic control will be in place while work is underway to ensure the safety of road users and workers,” a Transport for NSW statement read.

“Motorists are advised to allow up to five minutes’ additional travel time, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

“As this location is a high traffic area, Transport for NSW will ensure work is carried out to minimise impacts to traffic and the community, particularly residents living along the project length and on Malabar Drive.”

The project is expected to take three months, weather permitting.

It’s as the NSW Government has committed $1.5 million to build a left-turn slip lane at the Princes Highway and Hector McWilliam Drive intersection at Coila.

It would be in the southbound acceleration lane on the Princes Highway to allow those entering the highway from Hector McWilliam Drive to do so more safely and efficiently.

“Currently, motorists exiting Hector McWilliam Drive must enter the 100 km/h zone on the Princes Highway from a stop,” TfNSW stated.

“Waiting for a safe gap to enter results in delays on this approach, impacting journey time reliability, particularly during peak holiday periods.”

Work on the final design is continuing.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026 and is scheduled to take about 12 weeks to complete.

It’s expected the work will be scheduled outside of peak holiday periods to minimise impacts on motorists.

Pardon me. I seem to be able to put two facts together and get a bad answer.
This project starts on September 2nd 2025 and goes for approximately 3 months.
How will these road works cope with an extra 4000 (four THOUSAND) vehicles PER DAY over and above the usual traffic, because of the closure of North Head Road? That project had an estimated timeframe of 3 months as well, starting July 28th. So a two month overlap when ALL traffic on the Princes Highway AND North Head Road (George Bass Drive) will encounter these roadworks.
I hope residents and tourists will adopt an extra patient attitude!
