A police chase on the weekend ended when the alleged teenage driver crashed a stolen car into a tree before he was apparently found with an axe and other stolen property.
Officers were called to a home in Moruya, on the NSW South Coast, over reports that a ute had been stolen from the property before 4 am on Saturday morning (5 April), a NSW Police spokesperson said.
Police spotted the ute on George Bass Drive in Tomakin less than half an hour later.
While the officers directed the driver to stop, they allegedly failed to do so and the officers initiated a pursuit.
The ute allegedly reached 110 km/h in 80 km/h zones before the officers terminated the chase out of safety concerns.
However, they continued to monitor the ute before it crashed into a tree in Escape Place, Malua Bay, after trying to reverse out of the cul-de-sac.
The alleged driver – a 16-year-old boy – was not injured and was arrested at the scene.
During the arrest, police allegedly found an axe and personal items stolen from the Moruya home.
The 16-year-old’s charges include driving a conveyance without consent of the owner, police pursuit, driving recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, larceny, carrying a cutting weapon upon apprehension and having goods suspected of being stolen.
He was granted conditional bail to appear before the NSW Children’s Court later in April.
