A car chase on the NSW South Coast ended with a driver attacking an officer, leaving the senior constable with injuries to his face and hands, police allege.
Police were conducting random breath tests on the Princes Highway in Narooma at around 10:30 pm on Monday (20 January) when they pulled over a Holden Commodore, a NSW Police spokesperson said.
When officers approached the car, the driver allegedly drove off.
The officers began chasing the Commodore, which stopped a short time later on the town’s Riverside Drive.
Police say the car contained a 50-year-old male driver as well as two passengers: a 28-year-old man and a seven-year-old girl.
It is alleged that when police tried to arrest the driver, he resisted and headbutted a senior constable, causing injuries to the officer’s face and hands.
“The senior constable was taken to Moruya Hospital and treated for a possible fractured hand and nose,” a police spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the driver was taken to Batemans Bay Police Station, where he was subjected to a breath test and allegedly returned a positive reading of 0.032.
He was handed five charges and was refused bail to appear in the Bega Local Court on Tuesday (21 January).
The man’s charges include police pursuit, resisting police, assaulting police, driving while disqualified and special category drink driving.
