Christmas and the new year are almost here and though things seem to be slowing down there’s still a lot going on in the regions to get excited about. We’ve found some great events for you and your family – whether you want surfboat races, carnivals, carols, races or rodeos, the regions and the coasts are alive over the break.

George Bass Surfboat Marathon

When: 29 December to 4 January
Where: Starting at Batemans Bay
Cost: N/A.

The 50th George Bass Surfboat Marathon is coming. The longest surfboat marathon in the world features rowers from every state in the country as well as some international entrants all competing across a seven-day gauntlet of athleticism and grit. Rowers will cover 190 kilometres from Batemans Bay to Eden, battling the waves and their fatigue to push ahead and claim victory in one of the most exciting sporting events on the calendar.

Festival of Christmas Trees

When: 21 and 24 December, 3 to 9 pm. 22 and 23 December, 6 to 9 pm
Where: St John’s Anglican Church, Church Street, Wagga Wagga
Cost: Free entry.

St John’s Anglican Church shows off the creativity and Christmas spirit of the community through the festival of Christmas trees. These decorated trees, beautified by locals, will remain in place over the Christmas period and will get you in the spirit of the holiday. It’s a community celebration of hope, peace, joy and love. Everyone is welcome and the church would especially appreciate a gold coin donation for the Anglicare Emergency Relief Fund to help spread the spirit of charity and giving.

Bells Family Carnival

When: From 26 December to 26 January
Where: Batemans Bay, Batehaven, New South Wales
Cost: Free.

Bells Family Carnival is a beloved part of the Batemans Bay event scene. The Bells family has been putting on the carnival for generations and for the next month it finds its home in Batemans Bay. Check out their rides, games and food stalls, prepare to laugh and scream on the carnival rides or get in the competitive spirit and go against family in some of the games. It’s a great family event suitable for all ages that’s been touring Australia for decades.

Sunrise Yoga – Moruya Heads

When: 21 December, 6 to 7 am
Where: Moruya Heads lookout, Eurobodalla National Park, Moruya Heads
Cost: $25.

Moruya Heads has great views of the ocean, even better in the first light of the day. Feel the rays while exercising, relieving stress and improving your well-being at Sunrise Yoga. All skill levels and experience are welcome; newcomers to veterans, all are invited. Just bring a towel, a mat and a water bottle. You might want to bring some boardies as it’s hard to resist hopping in the water after an hour sweating in the sunshine. Book online or drop in with $25 cash on the day.

St Peter & Paul’s Goulburn – Carols by Candlelight

When: 22 December, 7 to 8:30 pm
Where: St Peter & Paul’s Old Cathedral, 36 Verner Street, Goulburn
Cost: Free.

Join the community at the beautiful St Peter and Paul’s Cathedral in Goulburn for a night of carol singing by candlelight. There’s a program of well-known carols as well as other popular Christmas songs sung by attendees as well as the parish musicians. There’s no finer place to listen to some classic carols than Goulburn’s beautiful heritage Catholic church, a symbol of the town’s history and architectural prowess.

Tyre Torque Narooma Cup and Christmas Cup Race Day

When: 22 December, gates open noon – eight-race card; first race 1:05 pm; last race 5:18 pm
Where: 100 Donnelly Drive at North Head Moruya
Cost: Tickets are available at the gate, general admission is $15, concession holders $10.

Get ready for a day of racing at the Moruya track this weekend. The Narooma Cup and Christmas Cup have all that you expect from the races – blistering speeds, fierce competition and a muscular display of equine endurance as well as the extras we love about race days. Fashion on the field, food and treat stalls, transport services (booking required), bookies, DJs and activities for the kids, it’s all set up and ready to go for the big day when you get to cheer on your lucky pick as it hurtles towards the finish line.

Goulburn Local Live Music Showcase

When: 27 December, 7:30 to 11 pm
Where: 19 Market Street, Goulburn
Cost: Free.

Musicians, listeners, songwriters and singers are welcome to the Goulburn Club on Friday for its monthly live music showcase. Locals come to show off their musical talents and there’s a variety of both solo and group regulars that you can always count on to entertain. Simply turn up and give your name to be given a slot to perform in. Celebrate local music or create some yourself.

Moruya Rodeo New Year’s Day

When: 1 January, gates open at 1 pm, main event at 4 pm
Where: Moruya Showground, Albert St, Moruya
Cost: Tickets from $15.

The Moruya Showground plays host to all the stockmen, stockwomen, cowboys and cowgirls who want to test their skills at the News Year’s Day rodeo. Join in yourself and see if you can stand a bucking bull or watch from the sidelines as the best cattle ropers and agriculturalists put their expertise to the test against the raw muscle and strength of a bull.
