The much-anticipated upgrade of Gundagai’s main street, Sheridan Street, is set to resume within the next week.
Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) said council contractor Huon had proposed to complete the work in three stages.
“Stage one will start at the Homer Street end, stage two will be in the middle and stage three will be the remainder of the works,” CGRC said in a statement.
“Huon is preparing to mobilise to the site to recommence construction and should commence within the next week.
“Residents will have noticed that physical construction work hasn’t been visible for some time. However, significant work has been undertaken to ensure that work is completed to the highest standard.”
CGRC Mayor Gil Kelly said the council acknowledged the disruption to the community and was looking forward to the upgraded street once it was completed.
“This final stage of the Sheridan Street upgrade will ensure that Gundagai’s main street will be a huge enhancement to the work already completed,” Councillor Kelly said.
“I do understand that whilst the work on the top end of the street causes interference with everyday business dealings, the team at council and the contractors are ensuring that all work is completed to the highest standard and is fit for the future.”
CGRC said the council staff had dealt with the challenge of the naturally occurring asbestos and ensured a plan was in place to manage it safely. The council engaged specialist contractors to ensure the removal of the asbestos-containing material was completed safely.
The worksite is near the Telstra phone exchange, where significant underground Telstra assets are present. CGRC said it found some Telstra infrastructure required repair.
“Council and the contractors are currently liaising with Telstra to ensure that the Telstra infrastructure is suitable for new works to be placed over the top. This will ensure that the new work will not be torn up if the Telstra assets fail in the short term.”
CGRC apologises to all residents for any inconvenience caused during the upgrade.
