5 PM FRIDAY: A woman who drowned on the South Coast on Tuesday (19 March), was a well-loved Wollongong nurse.
Yuliya Pashkovska was camping at Pebbly Beach with her husband and two children when she got into trouble in the water.
Surf Life Saving NSW initially reported Yuliya was attempting to save her daughter when she drowned, however NSW Police and NSW Ambulance have since said that was not the case.
“We do not have reports of anyone else in the water at the time, and no one else received treatment on the scene,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.
9 AM WEDNESDAY: A woman who died on a South Coast beach yesterday drowned attempting to save her daughter, according to Surf Life Saving NSW.
“The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was declared deceased on scene while a teenage female continued to be treated by paramedics and is currently in a good condition,” a spokesperson said.
The incident brings the drowning toll from 1 July 2023 to 40. This is also the second bystander drowning on the NSW coast since 1 July 2023. Bystander drownings happen when someone drowns after entering the water attempting to rescue another person.
5 PM TUESDAY: A woman has died after getting into difficulty while swimming on the South Coast this afternoon, Tuesday 19 March.
About 1:15 pm today, emergency services were called to Pebbly Beach, Durras North, about 29 km north-east of Batemans Bay, and found the woman unconscious in the water.
Two surfers managed to drag the woman onto their boards and commenced CPR, before the Westpac helicopter winched her to the shore.
Paramedics continued CPR; however, the woman could not be resuscitated and died at the scene. While she hasn’t been formally identified, it’s believed she is in her 40s.
Officers from the South Coast Police District will prepare a report for the coroner.
