A Sydney man will appear in court today over the alleged assault and carjacking of an elderly man on the NSW South Coast last week.
Just after 2:20 pm on Tuesday 20 July 2021, emergency services were called to a carpark on Vulcan Street, Moruya, after reports of an assault.
Police have been told an 83-year-old man was in the carpark when he was approached by an unknown man, who allegedly knocked him to the ground and stole his car keys, before fleeing in the man’s vehicle.
The elderly man was treated at the scene for knee and arm injuries, before being taken to Moruya Hospital in a stable condition; he has since been released.
Officers from South Coast Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following extensive enquiries, detectives attended a home on Judith Anderson Drive, Doonside, and located a man hiding under a bed, just after 3:00 pm yesterday (Tuesday 27 July 2021).
The 25-year-old was arrested and taken to Blacktown Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated robbery.
The man was refused bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court today (Wednesday 28 July 2021).
The elderly man’s vehicle has since been recovered from a shopping centre carpark in Blacktown, along with his car keys and phone.
It’s not known whether the accused was also breaching the state’s lockdown laws when he allegedly committed the offences.
