One of the busiest roads in the Eurobodalla will be closed for about three months while Eurobodalla Shire Council undertakes major earthworks as part of a road safety upgrade.
George Bass Drive at Lilli Pilli will be closed between Grandfathers Gully Road and Denise Drive forcing an estimated 5500 vehicles to detour through previously quiet rural roads.
From 7 am Monday 21 June to Friday 24 September, commuters will need to use Tallgums Way and The Ridge Road to access either side of the closure which will have reduced speed limits of 50 km/h and 60 km/h.
Eurobodalla Council’s infrastructure services director Warren Sharpe said the additional kilometre of detour would add between two and three minutes to trips between Surf Beach and Malua Bay.
“While the closure may cause temporary inconvenience, the volume of earthworks needed for the project requires a large number of heavy plant movements across the existing road,” Mr Sharpe said.
“Closing the road means the work can be completed sooner and far safer than building a road with more than 5500 vehicles passing through the worksite each day.
“The Ridge Road and Tallgums Way are sealed rural roads suited to the expected traffic. However, we ask that drivers take care, drive to the conditions and be mindful of residents living in this rural area.
“Lower roadworks speed limits have been imposed on the diversion roads and will be enforced by the police.”
Council received a $3.8 million Federal Government grant for the project which includes removing the tight bends, providing protected right-turn intersections to Grandfathers Gully Road and Denise Drive as well as widened lanes, centreline treatments and shoulders, improved lighting, delineation, protective fencing and provision for a future shared pathway connection. The former road reserve area will be revegetated once the new road is open.
Eurobodalla Council is writing to impacted residents between Old Grandfathers Pit Road and Lilli Pilli Road regarding changes to access and bus stops. Emergency services have also been notified.
